Project LCS4

Low-Cost Separation System for Small Satellites

project objective

The primary goal of the LCS4 (Low-Cost Separation System for Small Satellites) project is to design, develop, and qualify an affordable European alternative to existing small satellite separation systems. This new separation system is optimized for LightSat missions (lightweight satellites) and provides a cost-effective solution that is fully compatiblewith the PSC MLB (Payload Support Cone Mechanical Launch Base) system.

key components of the lcs4 system

1. Structural Subsystem

  • Circular Rings – The system consists of two circular rings, with one attached to the satellite and the other to the launch vehicle.
  • Separation occurs at the interface between these two rings, ensuring structural integrity and minimizing vibrations during launch.

2. Separation Subsystem

  • Locking Mechanism – Securely holds the satellite during pre-launch operations and flight and releases it upon command.
  • Designed to provide controlled separation velocity while minimizing unwanted torques, which could affect the satellite’s post-separation orientation.

3. Electrical Subsystem (mission-specific)

  • Electrical Interfaces – Includes connectors and microswitches that enable separation detection according to the specific mission requirements.
  • Capable of integrating redundant systems to ensure high reliability in the separation process.

    advantages of the lcs4 system

    • Low Cost – A budget-friendly alternative to existing separation systems.
    • Modularity – Adaptable to different sizes and weight categories of small satellites.
    • Compatibility – Fully integrable with standard launch adapters and systems such as PSC MLB.
    • Reliability – Optimized design minimizes the risk of failure during separation.

The LCS4 system introduces a new generation of cost-effective separation solutions, supporting the growth of the European small satellite market and enhancing efficiency and accessibility for space missions.
