Project IRIDE
European cooperation to build an advanced satellite constellation
overview
The IRIDE programme, initiated by the Italian Government, is a large-scale space initiative leveraging funding from the EU-funded Recovery and Resilience Plan for Italy (PNRR) and Italy’s National Complementary Plan.
The programme is set to enhance Earth observation capabilities through an advanced satellite constellation.
programme objectives
-
Satellite Constellation Development:
-
ESA, in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI), is responsible for implementing six satellite constellations under the IRIDE programme.
-
Each constellation is equipped with specific satellite technology, including radar, optical, hyperspectral, and multispectral instruments.
-
-
Operational Timeline:
-
The full IRIDE constellation is expected to be operational by June 2026.
-
The first satellite of the IRIDE programme, the Pathfinder Hawk, was successfully launched on 14 January 2025 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
-
sab cz contribution
- SAB CZ is responsible for delivering the lower module for the IRIDE Satellites Dispenser.
- The scheduled delivery of the module is planned for October 2025.
-
future impact
The IRIDE programme represents a significant step forward in Earth observation and environmental monitoring. By providing high-resolution satellite data, it will support various applications, including climate monitoring, disaster response, and urban planning, contributing to Italy’s strategic technological advancements in space.
